Foreign Languages Department

The Foreign Languages Department is an essential component and support pillar of the University of the Arts' academic support program, recognizing that foreign language instruction is fundamental to the process of knowledge-building and that foreign languages are an undeniable vehicle for the development of critical thinking and creative thinking. This unit was created to offer our students the opportunity to overcome language barriers and engage with other cultures, in keeping with the demands of a humanistic education that respects diversity.

For this reason, the Foreign Languages Department serves as a support unit for all UArtes schools. We have a select group of 11 highly dedicated faculty members with extensive teaching experience (native speakers and Ecuadorian faculty). In addition, the department prepares students for international proficiency exams in French, English, and Portuguese, with the ultimate goal of enhancing their professional competencies and facilitating opportunities to study abroad.

We offer English and French courses aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, as well as Portuguese courses following the guidelines of Brazil's Ministry of Education.

Our teaching method is based on interaction, placing particular emphasis on the intercultural dimension of foreign language learning. Students develop proficiency in the four core skills (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written expression, and oral expression) and the three basic levels of communication (phonetic-phonological, lexical-semantic, and morphosyntactic) through participation in a variety of activities, while fostering an appreciation for diversity through educational inclusion. Through small-scale pedagogical projects, we aim to connect the use of the target language with artistic creation.

Our second-language proficiency program currently follows a curriculum designed to prepare students to achieve level B1 in the language of their choice. Starting at Level 1, students receive 4 hours of instructor contact time per week, in addition to 1.5 hours of conversation workshop (12 weeks). Students also complete 6 hours of independent study per week and 3.15 hours of lab practice, along with personalized tutoring sessions. Under this model, by the end of their training, students are prepared to take the INTERNAL CERTIFICATION EXAM to obtain the certificate required for graduation purposes.

Level Recognition During the Leveling Stage

The Foreign Languages Department is committed to conducting a profile assessment for each student entering the UArtes Leveling stage, in order to guide their study and training in English, Portuguese, or French, according to their preference.

This profile assessment is carried out through a proficiency exam in the selected language. The results of this exam will place the student at the level corresponding to their current knowledge and, where applicable, allow for exemption from equivalent levels within the academic system prior to beginning the first semester of their degree program. Students who already hold an internationally recognized certification in a foreign language must submit a copy of their certification to the Foreign Languages Department in order to be exempted from the academic support program.

Level Proficiency Exams — Undergraduate Students

Students currently enrolled in undergraduate programs who did not take the placement exam at the appropriate time, and/or who have been independently working to improve their foreign language proficiency, may request to take the proficiency exams.

These exams are held during week 15 of the Foreign Languages academic calendar, and registration is completed through an online form — sent via mass email one month prior to the exam — which requires uploading proof of independent language improvement efforts.

Language change requests are not handled by the Foreign Languages Department. This process is carried out through the SGA – Requests module and must be directed to the Academic Secretariat.

Language changes must be completed no later than the end of the 2nd semester of the degree program, in order to avoid delaying the foreign language proficiency process required for entry into the Graduation Unit.

Please check the academic calendar available on the UArtes website for the request submission dates established by the Academic Secretariat.

Course withdrawal requests are not handled by the Foreign Languages Department. This process is carried out through the SGA – Requests module and must be directed to the Academic Secretariat. Please check the academic calendar available on the UArtes website for the dates established by the Academic Secretariat for this type of request.

Internal foreign language proficiency certificates are issued manually, upon request via email. Please send your request by email, at least one month in advance, to dle@uartes.edu.ec

Foreign language proficiency certificates are valid internally, primarily to demonstrate fulfillment of the prerequisite for entry into the Graduation Unit.

At the local and national level, the validity of the certificate will depend on the institution to which it is presented. However, since these certificates do not carry international accreditation, they cannot be used for procedures with institutions abroad.

The results obtained in the placement test are registered in the SGA and create precedence in the system to make your enrollment effective at the time you can enroll. However, it is advisable not to allow too much time to complete the proficiency process before entering the Degree Unit.

If you fail a language level for the third time, you will not be able to continue the proficiency program in the language of your choice at UArtes. You will have to complete your modules in an external academy and/or institution and present the certificate obtained for validation of the pending levels in the SGA.

The foreign language courses are a free complementary service offered by UArtes, but there is no obligation to take the foreign language modules with us.

You can become certified on your own at the establishment of your choice. Just remember that you must complete the homologation process so that the results are registered in the SGA and you can enter the Degree Unit without any problems.

This is not possible, as the tuition-free policy applies to only one foreign language. If you wish to take another language concurrently, you would have to pay the applicable registration and course fees, as the second language would be considered a separate enrollment.
